Back-up your Valuables Stupid

Back-up your Valuables Stupid

It doesn’t matter what cool new operating system you have for your computer, blog, website, Apple Tunes, baby pictures, illegal movies, it doesn’t matter if you fail to back-up your systems. Stop calling yourself stupid for not making copies of your work history. I can see into your future, for years you have been compiling information without a backup of your very valuable data. The day is coming soon that you will waste lots of time crying because you failed to back-up.

Here is a new perspective on your information on your hard drive. Data is information that’s converted into knowledge. Knowledge is then used by you to create wisdom. This wisdom that you have created will help you to become successful. If the information that you have stored right now was to vanish into thin air, what would you do about it. How much money have you spent over the years on your music collection?

Backup software is so cheap these days and a lot of it is free online. All operating systems come with backup software ready to go when you click a few buttons. All you need is to provide a source to store your backups. My favorite backup software is NTI Shadow. It gives me multiple options at a low price. NTI Shadow 4 saves my information in its’ native state, meaning I can go into my storage device and see the document if I want to view the stored documents. I can back-up every 10 minutes if needed or schedule for every 30 days with the comfort that being proactive is the best way to manage my information and music. Whatever software application you have set it up today. If you need help call a friend.

Here are the easiest ways to remember to back-up your junk, I mean your valuables. Here are 10 lazy and easy ways to remember to back up your data/junk.

1. System Crash

If you experience one hard drive crash and lose all of your data the fear has been instill in your brain. If you forget again you are lazy and live a dangerous life. Image may be NSFW.

2. Calendar Reminders

Microsoft Outlook Reminder or use Google’s calendar to set a reoccurring reminder to keep you out of trouble and to provide safety to your valuables.

3. Android device or Apple I-phone devices

Set a repeating reminder alarm in your cell phone. Most applications for alarms are free from Google Play. Don’t forget the Apple Store with 1000’s of applications.

4. When it’s time to pay the bills

When it’s time to pay bills you need to add in your backup schedule. Every time you pay the mortgage and car note you need to backup.

5. Post-It Note

A post-it note on your monitor gives you the visual you need every single day. Now maybe you will do some out-of-cycle backups just because you know you have added something valuable to your computer that if lost could drive you berserk.

6. Daylight savings time change, Spring forward and fall back

You can change all your clocks, replace the battery on your fire alarms, and backup your computer at a minimum twice a year. This means you’ll only backup twice a year, which really isn’t enough for most people.

7. Family & Friends who visit

Anytime you invite someone over to stay at your place of residence you must add this into the things to do list. Family members coming in from out of town always need to use a computer. Friends coming over to your barbecue just add this chore in with the rest of them like buying food and cleaning up the house.

8. Facebook, Email, and texting

When you decide to back-up let everyone else know what you did and why. Encourage others that you care about to not make the same mistakes. Every time you back up, drop your Facebook friends a note asking them to follow your lead. Social sites should be put to good use.

9. Making you smile

If you going to treat yourself to something you know you should not have eaten because you are watching your weight, and then do the backup. If you do the back-up reward yourself with a cold beer or that large piece of strawberry shortcake, sounds yummy.

10. Purchasing automatic backup software

Purchasing automatic backup software is a sure fire way to resolve the, I forgot or I did not have time to run the back-up. Take the time to set it up and then like magic it will run all night while you sleep.

I wrote this article because as a technical guy I see too many computers that crash and everyone expects a miracle to happen. Computer Doctors do a good job of retrieving information that has been lost on a hard drive. Check out CNET for free software recommendations for back-ups. Respect your data as valuable information that could one day put your business in jeopardy due to not having enough wisdom to prepare for the ‘what if’s’ in life. If you run your life like a business this wouldn’t be a problem.
